Snoop Dogg's latest album, "Missionary," has made a significant impact on the music charts, securing a spot in the top 10 across various Billboard rankings. The album has achieved impressive debut positions, including No. 7 on Top Album Sales, No. 7 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and No. 3 on Top Rap Albums, all as of the December 28th chart date. Additionally, "Missionary" has made a strong entry at No. 20 on the comprehensive Billboard 200 chart. This marks Snoop Dogg's highest-charting album on Top Album Sales in over a decade and a half.
"Missionary" is a collaborative effort between Snoop Dogg and the renowned producer Dr. Dre, marking their first joint project since the success of Snoop's seminal album "Doggystyle" in 1993. The album has garnered attention on Billboard's trending topics, showcasing its popularity and impact on the music scene.
Billboard's Top Album Sales chart is a reflection of the week's top-selling albums, based solely on traditional sales. The chart's inception dates back to May 25, 1991, when Billboard began using electronic monitoring for sales data from SoundScan, now known as Luminate. Until December 6, 2014, the Billboard 200 albums chart relied solely on pure album sales. Since then, the methodology has evolved to include a blend of album sales, track equivalent album (TEA) units, and streaming equivalent album (SEA) units.
"Missionary" debuted with an impressive 38,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. during the week ending December 19, according to Luminate. This total includes 20,500 in album sales, 16,500 in SEA units, and the remainder in TEA units. On the Top Album Sales chart, "Missionary" is Snoop Dogg's 13th album to reach the top 10, surpassing his previous high with "Ego Trippin," which debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the March 29, 2008, chart.
The rest of the top 10 on Top Album Sales features a variety of artists and genres. Stray Kids' "HOP" opens at No. 1 with 180,000 copies sold, marking the group's sixth chart-topping album. Taylor Swift's "The Tortured Poets Department" falls from No. 1 to No. 2 with 50,000 copies sold, a 75% decrease. The "Wicked" film soundtrack rises to No. 3 with 29,000 copies sold, a 5% decrease. Chappell Roan's former chart leader "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess" jumps to No. 4 with 28,000 copies sold, a 34% increase. Sabrina Carpenter's "Short n' Sweet" moves to No. 5 with 26,000 copies sold, an 8% decrease.
Billie Eilish's "Hit Me Hard and Soft" scales to No. 6 with 23,000 copies sold, a 26% increase. TWICE's "STRATEGY" falls to No. 8 with 19,000 copies sold in its second week, a 76% decrease. Vince Guaraldi Trio's "A Charlie Brown Christmas" TV soundtrack bumps to No. 9 with 16,000 copies sold, a 20% increase. Taylor Swift's former No. 1 album, "1989 (Taylor's Version)," climbs to No. 10 with 14,000 copies sold, a 29% increase.
Snoop Dogg's "Missionary" is not just a testament to his enduring presence in the music industry but also a showcase of the creative synergy between him and Dr. Dre. The album's success on multiple Billboard charts highlights its commercial and critical appeal, solidifying Snoop Dogg's status as a legendary figure in hip-hop and beyond.
